The Starovodské jedliny Site of European Importance extends along the northwestern slope of the highest peak of the Volovské vrchy Mountains, Zlatý stôl. Its area is 468.675 ha. The easiest way to reach Starovodské jedliny is from the village whose poetic name they themselves bear, Stará Voda (Old Water).
The subject of protection is a variety of forest communities. Thanks to the reserve’s range of elevations, from 602 to 1290 m above sea level, these include beech, fir-beech, linden-maple scree forests, as well as spruce forests extending all the way to the summit of Zlatý stôl.
Although Starovodské jedliny are diverse in terms of species and age, it is not difficult to find fir trees here that are more than 120 years old. Dried-out or broken standing trees are left in the forest, contributing to the diversity of nesting birds, along with a large amount of fallen deadwood, which is home to many rare insect species.
