Jozef Adit is located in Gelnica, in the Turzov area. The length of this adit is around 1,700 m. As early as 1765, Jozef Adit was mentioned as a relatively extensive mining work. However, the exact date when this hereditary adit was driven is unknown. It was among the most profitable copper mines in Austria-Hungary. Mining began to decline in the second half of the 19th century; the Jozef hereditary adit was probably completely abandoned during this period.
Almost one hundred years later (in 1952–1953), the adit was reopened by East Slovak Ore Exploration. Geological exploration work was carried out during this period. Its current primary function is to drain water from the higher levels of the Gelnica Vein.
In the 1970s, Jozef Adit was reopened in order to connect it via a ventilation shaft with the 3rd deep level of the Krížová mine. The depth of the ventilation shaft is approximately 112 m.
Currently, the adit is open to the public. It is an external exhibition of the Mining Museum in Gelnica. At present, a section just over 300 m long from the adit entrance is accessible. In the next stage, the plan is to open the adit as far as the aforementioned ventilation shaft, located 515 m from the adit entrance.
