The primeval forest residue below Kojšovská hoľa (1246 m above sea level) is located on its northern slope, near the red hiking trail in the direction of Kojšov. Its area is 15 ha.
It is a beautiful primeval forest remnant of nutrient-rich and acidophilous fir-beech forests in the 5th and 6th forest vegetation zones. Alongside beech, the main tree species are silver fir, spruce and sycamore maple; occasionally, there are also European ash, wych elm, Norway maple and rowan.
The Kojšovská hoľa primeval forest remnant was included in 2017 in the European network of protected areas NATURA 2000 as part of the Aboď Site of European Importance. It is located within the territory of the Košice Municipal Forests; currently, of its almost one-hundred-hectare area, the larger part is under the 5th level of protection and the remainder under the 4th level of protection ( more info ).
