Bukovec is not just a reservoir above Košice. It is also a beautiful viewpoint hill in the Volovské Mountains, in the Hnilec Mountains subunit. It offers views of Galmus, the eastern part of the Low Tatras, as well as the entire Belianske, High and Western Tatras.
The views are reached by a grassy ridge that stretches practically all the way to the village of Závadka. Its origin is connected with Wallachian colonization. The meadows have long been used for grazing livestock, and they are still used for this purpose today.
As a result, diverse meadow and pasture communities developed on the ridge. On the slope of Bukovec there is also an extensive mountain peat bog with a rich occurrence of several rare and protected plant species.
You can reach Bukovec from the villages of Poráč and Švedlár by following the blue hiking trail. The green hiking trail from the village of Závadka also joins it below the neighboring Holý vrch. This ridge section is an excellent place for mountain biking and, in good winter conditions, also for cross-country skiing or ski touring.
