Kojšovská hoľa is the highest peak of the subunit bearing the same name. A vast grassy summit rises above the surrounding forests, where bilberries, cranberries and heather grow abundantly.
Kojšovská hoľa offers a broad panoramic view, especially to the east and south. Košice lie below it as if in the palm of your hand; in good visibility, it is possible to see as far as Hungary or, beyond the Slanské vrchy Mountains, to Ukraine.
From a distance, the iconic dome of the observatory of the Slovak Hydrometeorological Institute can already be seen at the summit. It was built on Kojšovská hoľa in 1988.
Several “unusual” pillars stand near the summit elevation point. There are exactly 49 of them, and they are peace pillars. Symbolizing Slovakia’s position on the 49th parallel, they bear various peace messages from around the world. The pillars, which can be found all over the world as part of a UN peace project, were donated to us by Japan.
Erika Chalet is located about a half-hour walk from the summit. It offers refreshments and accommodation, especially during the ski season on Kojšovská hoľa.
Two asphalt roads lead to Erika Chalet, one from the village of Zlatá Idka and the other through Perlová dolina in Gelnica. From Zlatá Idka, you can reach the ridge via the blue hiking trail. The red hiking trail leads from the Strieborná saddle above Kojšov. A yellow hiking trail leads from Prakovce to Kojšovská hoľa; at Izbica Chalet, it is joined by a blue trail leading from Gelnica. The red E8 hiking trail, known as the Heroes’ Trail of the Slovak National Uprising, also runs along the main ridge around Erika Chalet.
