Folkmarská skala is a peak in the Volovské vrchy mountains, in the Kojšovská hoľa subunit. The peak and its surroundings, covering 136.768 ha, belong to the system of protected areas of European importance under the Natura 2000 project.
Folkmarská skala forms the northeastern boundary of the Volovské vrchy mountains, rising prominently above the neighbouring ridges. With its shape, it is undoubtedly one of the icons of the Volovské vrchy.
Above the mixed, but predominantly beech forests stretch mountain meadows rich in flora. Among the rare plant species, you can find, for example, the Slovak pasqueflower. However, the rarest phenomenon is probably the Spiš rowan. It is an endemic rowan species, so apart from Folkmarská skala, it cannot be found anywhere else in the world. The summit offers a magnificent view of the Volovské vrchy mountains, the Čierna hora mountain range with the Roháčka peak, and, in good conditions, the Tatras.
Like the entire Volovské vrchy mountains, Folkmarská skala was also used for mining in the past. Along the way to the summit, you can find several examples reminding visitors of those difficult times.
The summit of Folkmarská skala is most easily accessible from Folkmarské sedlo, from where a yellow hiking trail leads up. It also leads to the summit from the birthplace of Juraj Jakubisko, the village of Kojšov. The neighbouring rocky cliffs of Turniská are also part of the limestone arch enclosing the Volovské vrchy mountains. A green hiking trail from Zemičky saddle, located below Folkmarská skala, will take you to this popular climbing site.
