Ľudmila Mine Adit is part of the Mining Open-Air Museum in the municipality of Hnilčík. It is located in the Roztocký Brook valley on the northern slope of Borovniak hill (formerly Stammberg).
It was driven with the intention of mining, but its function changed before operations began. The adit became a storage facility for explosives. It has a convenient location – it is relatively close to the portals of the main opening adits of the time, driven opposite each other (the Ernest Hereditary Adit opening the Široká Vein, and the Katarína Hereditary Adit opening the Hrubá Roztocká Vein).
The work was probably constructed by the Upper Silesian Joint-Stock Company at the end of the 19th century, when it bought up all the mining fields for extracting iron ores in Roztoky.
At the end of the several-dozen-metre-long straight passage, an explosives storage facility was driven; a twice-bent entrance passage leads to it (photo: entrance on the right). At its end is a storage chamber. In the event of an explosion, the winding passages were intended to dampen the pressure wave and prevent more significant damage to the adit.
Even the regulations of that time, however, required the explosive itself to be stored in a different space from the detonators. These had their place at the very end of the straight passage (photo: entrance on the left).
At the beginning of the adit, the ceiling is secured against collapses. However, do not expect any concrete or metal supports. The passage is meticulously assembled from stones obtained directly during the driving work. Thanks only to the pressure transferred from the arch to the walls, they have remained in place for decades.
