When arriving in Gelnica from Margecany, in addition to the panel apartment buildings, a wooden tower rises toward the sky on the hill opposite. The “Bognár” lookout tower is one of two towers built above the town in 2018. The other is located on the opposite hill, at a place called Klimo.
The Bognár tower is accessible from the town, from the edge of the Legy district. A path through the meadows leads to the Klimo tower from the local funeral home. The lookouts are 30–45 minutes’ walk from the town.
The third lookout is not a tower. It is a gazebo called Gloriet. It offers an excellent view, however, thanks to its position on a rocky cliff. This is currently covered by trees that have overgrown it in the recent past. When looking from the town, you can therefore spot a small house protruding from the dense forest if you look carefully.
The lookout at an elevation of 785 m above sea level is accessible from the town via a winding blue hiking trail leading from the Miners’ Square. Along the way, you will also come across a forgotten concrete platform. It once formed the foundation of the Swiss House (Schweizerhaus), which was once part of Gelnica’s spa facilities. Švajc, as the locals called this place, was the starting point for an excursion to Gloriet.
This place is also associated with a legend. It says that during the battles for Gelnica Castle, a king who had been lured onto the walls was shot dead from Gloriet. If you take a trip there, remember this legend.
